Choosing where to live is about more than square footage. It's about the rhythm of a place — where you'll spend your Saturdays, how you'll unwind after work, and what's waiting a short walk or drive from your front door.

Richmond packs a remarkable amount into one mid-sized city: a wild river running straight through downtown, a food and craft-beverage scene that punches far above its weight, centuries of architecture, and a creative streak you can feel on any given weekend. Here's a tour of what there is to love — organized by the things people move here for.

The River & the Outdoors

  • James River Park System — More than 550 acres of islands, trails, and shoreline threading right through the middle of the city — Richmond is one of the only places in the country with genuine whitewater rapids in its urban core.

  • Belle Isle — A 54-acre island reached by a footbridge slung under the Lee Bridge, with flat rocks for sunbathing, skyline views, and a rock-climbing wall nearby.

  • Pony Pasture — Calm-water rapids, Half Moon Beach, and shady riverside trails on the south bank — a favorite for paddling, swimming, and easy walks.

  • Buttermilk & North Bank Trails — The James River Park Loop links them into an 8-to-13-mile ribbon of riverside singletrack for hikers and mountain bikers.

  • The Virginia Capital Trail — A flat, fully paved 52-mile path connecting Richmond to Jamestown, built for cyclists and walkers of every ability.

  • Maymont & Byrd Park — A 100-acre historic estate with gardens and a nature center, right beside Byrd Park's lakes and walking paths.

Food, Coffee & Breweries

  • Scott's Addition — An old industrial district turned beverage playground — breweries (The Veil, Ardent, Hardywood, Väsen, Isley), cideries (Blue Bee, Buskey), distilleries, an urban winery, and duckpin bowling at River City Roll, all in a walkable grid.

  • Carytown — The "Mile of Style," lined with independent restaurants, one-off shops, and the historic Byrd Theatre.

  • Farmers Markets — The producer-only South of the James market in Forest Hill Park, plus the Byrd House, RVA Black, and Latino farmers markets around the city.

  • Coffee Culture — A deep bench of independent roasters and neighborhood cafés — you're rarely far from a good cup.

  • A Standout Dining Scene — From ZZQ's Texas-style barbecue to nationally recognized fine dining, RVA keeps landing on "best food city" lists.

Historic Charm & Architecture

  • The Fan District — One of the largest intact early-1900s streetcar-suburb neighborhoods in the country — block after block of Victorian and Edwardian rowhouses.

  • Church Hill — Cobblestone streets and St. John's Church, where Patrick Henry delivered his "give me liberty or give me death" speech in 1775.

  • Monument Avenue — A wide, tree-canopied boulevard lined with grand early-20th-century architecture.

  • Jackson Ward — A nationally significant historic district central to Richmond's Black heritage, home to the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site and the historic Hippodrome Theater.

  • Hollywood Cemetery & Maymont — Dramatic river-bluff landscapes and preserved estates that carry the city's older stories.

Pet-Friendly Living

  • Barker Field — The popular off-leash dog park at Byrd Park, a longtime gathering spot for RVA dogs and their people.

  • River Trails — Miles of leash-friendly paths winding through the James River Park System.

  • Dog-Friendly Patios — Scott's Addition breweries and neighborhood spots across the city happily welcome four-legged regulars.

  • An Active Animal Community — The Richmond SPCA and the Richmond Animal League anchor an unusually vibrant pet-rescue and adoption culture.

Arts & Makers

  • Virginia Museum of Fine Arts — A world-class collection with free general admission, open 365 days a year.

  • First Fridays — A monthly art walk and street party along Broad Street's Arts District, rolling through historic Jackson Ward.

  • The ICA at VCU — Bold contemporary exhibitions at Virginia Commonwealth University's Institute for Contemporary Art.

  • Street Art & Murals — Richmond's celebrated murals turn whole blocks into open-air galleries.

  • Live Music — The new 7,500-seat Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront brings major touring acts to the downtown riverfront, alongside longtime rooms like The National and The Broadberry.
